February 13, 2009 George Borisov - lecture/performance of music of Domenico Alberti

In Dr. Borisov’s own words:
I will play some samples of Alberti’s music - they are really lovely as well as try to clarify his place in history of keyboard music. Why Alberti’s bass became such a popular accompaniment device? How it was born? What Mozart learned from Alberti? What new aesthetic standards for keyboard sonata outlined Alberti? Is it enough to bring a great idea in order to be famous? These and some other questions will be in the focus of my presentation.

George Borisov received his professional training in piano performance from Krasnodar State Music College (1967-1971, Krasnodar, Russia), the Rachmaninov State Conservatory (1971-1976, Rostov, Russia) and  the Glinka State Conservatory (1979-1982, Novosibirsk, Russia). He received his Ph.D. in musicology from All-Russia Institute of Musicology (1989-1992, Moscow, Russia). He studied with prominent prof. Anna Baron (pupil of H. Heihaus and O. Kalantarova) and prof. Ludmilla Korabelnikova (pupil of B. Asafiev). His performing experience includes piano solo and chamber music recitals in the countries of the former Soviet Union, Austria and in the United States. He published a book and numerous articles on the history of music culture of South Russia.  For more than eight years he was a host for the TV music-historical shows (Krasnodar, Russia). He taught major piano and music appreciation courses at Krasnodar State University of Culture and Arts (Russia) and  Ocean County College (New Jersey). Currently he  maintains a private piano studio in Colts Neck. Among his students are prizewinners of international and local piano competitions and festivals. Dr. Borisov served as an adjudicator for NJMTA, MEA,  National Guild of Piano Teachers and other professional music organizations. He is the founder of the Golden Key International Music Festival (United States, Austria) and the Alberti International Piano Competition.Recently he published collection of keyboard sonatas by Domenico Alberti.

December 19, 2008 Meeting

INGRID CLARFIELD will give a presentation on:

Developing A Technical/Musical Vocabulary to Inspire Artistry

Inspiring artistic performance should be an integral part of all piano study, beginning with the first lesson.  To achieve maximum results we should always be relating even the most basic technique to music as a part of musical expression and stylistic understanding. This workshop will provide teachers with rote exercises, etudes, and repertoire from beginning through advanced level that will show how to link technique and musicality.  Suggestions will be given as to how to encourage critical listening skills with appropriate vocabulary for the young beginner, which will help develop good practice habits that will continue to improve as their repertoire becomes more advanced. Participants are encouraged to bring in examples of music that they would like discussed.

Ingrid Clarfield is a nationally recognized teacher, clinician, pianist, and author of many collections for Alfred Publishing Co.  She has given hundreds of lecture-recitals, workshops and master classes at, to name just a few, state and national conferences of The Music Teachers National Association, National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy, the TCU/Van Cliburn Institute, The National Piano Teachers Institute, World Piano Pedagogy Conference, etc.  She is currently Professor of Piano and Coordinator of the Piano Department at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, N,J.
